RACE INTO SPACE GAME SOFTWARE
Race into Space is the free software version of Interplay's Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space. This is the reworked version following the source release for the computer version of the Liftoff! Board game by Fritz Bronner. On June 14, 1949, a second V-2 flight carrying a live Air Force Aeromedical Laboratory monkey, Albert II, attained an altitude of 83 miles.

Lack of fanfare and documentation made Albert an unsung hero of animal astronauts.

On June 11, 1948, a V-2 Blossom launched into space from White Sands, New Mexico carrying Albert I, a rhesus monkey. Tips: Astronauts are impatient and demand to fly all the time they live for it! So if you forget about one crew-member, the other members will become frustrated and they will quit after some time. Oh yeah, net play is a slick addition!Īlthough quite challenging, Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space is definitely worth a try, since it's very entertaining. Glad to see classics like this being kept alive. Other times there is no key at all, and you must use interface buttons. Currently, escape is sometimes cancel/back, and other times you must use 'e'. I wish escape was the universal cancel/back key. Mainly due to optimizations: - You cannot UNDO purchases. Turn based play ala Civ 2, but your building up a space program from the ground up! My only complaint is with un-uniform key commands. Therere still a few restrictions compared to the original DOS game. A little bit of strategy and planning mixed with a bit of micro management. When it comes down to it, the game is very simple. This game has frustrated me countless times, yet I keep coming back to try again! Those of you who played any of the Gradius games (Especially 3) will know the feeling I'm talking about. These days, games hand-hold you though the whole process, leaving little to be discovered. This is from an era where games were NOT intuitive, and were just plain difficult.

The full protocol is described in the file 'protocol' in the top level of the source repository, which can be found on github. This game brings me back to me youth on the Apple II! I love it, I've gotten quite addicted. It will only communicate with the server specified by the user in the in-game UI (which defaults to localhost), and its communication consists of reports on the current game state, which are only sent when manually triggered by the user (by pressing the SYNC button), requests for the corresponding state of other players (triggered by the Join, Refresh and SYNC buttons), and messages used to Join or Leave a game on the server.

The Race Into Space client KSP addon communicates over the network.

The source code is at, and releases can be downloaded from. It still has a few rough edges, like a total lack of access control on the server, but it seems to be working so far. If someone wants to write configs for other contract packs, pull requests welcome.
RACE INTO SPACE GAME MODS
They can also view the game state by pointing a web browser at the server.Īpart from needing a common set of contracts, the players can have completely different mods installed, although for the sake of balance and fairness you will usually want to agree on a list of allowed mods.Ĭurrently it's in beta testing, and it only has configs for RP-0 (the RSS career mod). The other players just connect to that server from within KSP. if behind a router/NAT you will need to port forward). One person (usually whoever organised the game) has to run the server, which is a Python program using Twisted and Nevow, and needs to be network-visible (so e.g. Then, when everyone's game is past the first date on which a milestone was achieved, the server now knows who got it first, and they get some extra funds in their game (and bragging rights, which are of course far more important). The idea is that everyone in the game syncs with the server every now and then, to say "my game is at $date" and "I achieved $milestone on $date". As those of you who watch Twitch streams may already be aware, I recently developed an asynchronous multiplayer mod, Race Into Space.
